Comparison of Head Thrust Test With Head Autorotation Test Reveals That the Vestibulo-ocular Reflex Is Enhanced During Voluntary Head Movements

چکیده
Methods: We used scleral coils to measure the horizontal (yaw) vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in 5 healthy human subjects and in 11 patients who underwent labyrinthectomy. We used 2 paradigms. Using HART, subjects visually fixated a target during self-generated, sweptfrequency, sinusoidal, horizontal head rotations. Using HTT, patients fixated the target during horizontal head thrusts delivered randomly in direction and time.

Comparison of head thrust test with head autorotation test reveals that the vestibulo-ocular reflex is enhanced during voluntary head movements.
OBJECTIVES To compare 2 clinical tests of vestibular function, the head autorotation test (HART) and the head thrust test (HTT), and to determine why they give disparate results in patients with known unilateral vestibular deficiency (UVD) due to labyrinthectomy. METHODS We used scleral coils to measure the horizontal (yaw) vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in 5 healthy human subjects and in 11 p...
متن کاملDiagnostic Screening with the Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT)
The primary purpose of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is to allow clear vision during walking and other faster movements. These occur at frequencies greater than 1 Hz. Other oculo-motor systems, such as smooth pursuit and optokinetic, respond poorly at these higher frequencies. The VOR functions as the major oculo-motor system responsible for maintaining visual fixation during faster head mo...
متن کاملCongenital ocular motor apraxia
Congenital ocular motor apraxia, described in 1952 by Professor David Cogan, is characterized by defective or absent voluntary and optically induced horizontal saccades and compensatory jerky head movements or thrusts to accomplish ocular refixation (1-3). The most common initial sign is the inability to follow objects visually. The diagnosis is usually made between the fourth and eighth months...
متن کاملGalvanic stimulation of the vestibular periphery in guinea pigs during passive whole body rotation and self-generated head movement.
Irregular vestibular afferents exhibit significant phase leads with respect to angular velocity of the head in space. This characteristic and their connectivity with vestibulospinal neurons suggest a functionally important role for these afferents in producing the vestibulo-collic reflex (VCR). A goal of these experiments was to test this hypothesis with the use of weak galvanic stimulation of ...
متن کاملTest-retest reliability of the VOR as measured via Vorteq in healthy subjects.
To determine the reliability of the vestibolo-ocular reflex test measured via Vorteq, 16 subjects underwent head-autorotation test at the frequencies 1-5 Hz. All patients underwent the re-test. No linear correlation was observed between the measurements, i.e., no repeatability of the same measurements at the various frequencies. The Head Auto-Rotation Test by Vorteq has demonstrated advantages:...
